IiC aims to raise the aspirations and achievements of young people living in Thames Gateway South Essex most deprived communities and to promote learning opportunities that support individuals to improve their skills for life and employment prospects. There is also the opportunity to support the national agenda and to develop leadership and management skills amongst the VCS and social enterprises to enhance their service delivery capacity and provide an intermediate labour market to assist disadvantaged groups in gaining employment.
By raising aspirations and achievements amongst disadvantaged communities IiC can contribute to broader economic development by:
• Improving people’s view of the society in which they live and redefining their horizons – what it is possible for them to do or attempt within it;
• Breaking the cycle of disadvantage in communities where the lack of basic skills amongst parents affects the educational achievements of their children;
• Improving peoples’ ability to secure employment, maintain themselves in it and achieve income growth over time; and
• Investing in communities of interest and place to build social capital.
